Assuming he owns the place, not much you can do. Definitely keep your code in version control, or at a bare minimum back it up with an automated script or something.

If he doesn't own the place, going over their head is an option but a bad one for your longevity at the business.

I'd say let em do what they want and revert it if you don't like it. You guys could talk about starting to enforce pull requests as the only mechanism of getting into prod, then your dev team will have a chance to review every line before they go into prod

My biggest gripe with vnc clients is 8 character maximum password lengths for the default protocol. Straight up crazy.

Vscode when I'm feeling productive, neovim when I'm feeling saucy

Hate pretty much every other ide out there, but do occasionally get forced into Android studio or xcode. Xcode is the worst, msvs a close second.

One day a multi cursor first multi-language extension lightweight ide will replace vscode I'm sure but it's solid for now.

"Which is bad news for developers"

Nah, we've been through lots of iterations of community for developers, irc, maillists, forums, stackoverflow, etc. Most of my complex questions go through specific discord communities now. I'm not trying to spend a year editing a single post because some swamp ass weanie on stackoverflow has his nose covered in rule dust.

Yes ai has changed the game a bit, but it is not removing community, it's mostly just cutting down on the question duplication

My most recent foray into a new technology was working with vulkan in rust on a mac, stackoverflow is useless compared to the vulkan discord.

Binary search, there are so many instances where problems in life can be solved by eliminating half of a given set repeatedly.

Blender broken? There are only so many things that can go wrong, analyze the situation and try to find something that cuts your problem in half.

  1. Is the light on? It’s not electricity and that's a huge chunk of what makes a blender work.
  2. Light not on? Well now you've eliminated (temporarily) mechanical systems and electrical remains. Further splitting that part of the blender means either house power or internal blender power, check the outlet with another machine

This approach involves further splitting the problem into 2 as evenly as possible each time. It doesn’t make sense to whip out the multimeter if the on light isn't shining, you don't need to check on your house's breakers if the light is on, etc.

This system works for troubleshooting almost anything, all you have to do is find chokepoints and identify sections of your target. Toilet not flushing, faucet not on, car not starting, neck pain, allergies, it's almost harder to think of something it doesn't apply to.

Finally something we both agree on

Just try em out! You can't know until you perform the labor or at the very least shadow, that's why internships are such a big thing. Your parents did you a massive disservice.

I could always use a custom agent, but the extra features in chatgpt are nice. Why does it have to act like a third rate lackey trying to get on their boss's good side?

A few friends got emails today about Mass General moving forward with layoffs this week. Anyone you know affected already?

Artificial Superintelligence, AI systems that are more intelligent than humans across every domain, may or may not be coming soon

What could we do to prepare now for a future where it has arrived?

I have been considering:

  • starting local community groups
  • updating my investment strategies to be more resilient to market disruption
  • diversifying personal income streams
  • staying up to date with the latest news and learn to better use the latest tools/technology
  • upgrading personal skills towards the harder to replace industries

It's a bit difficult to imagine a truly "safe" way of life. Barring UBI and more progressive taxes it seems like it may be quite challenging for the average person to exist comfortably.

Some industries that are already impacted at the level of technology we already have

  • programming
  • ui design
  • creative writing
  • technical writing
  • customer support
  • graphic art
  • data analysis

I think almost every other industry is at risk of significant disruption. A capitalism based society will always stray toward the cheapest option, "if AI can take customer support calls for $1/day and customer satisfaction doesn't dip, why would I pay a person $150/day?"

I wonder if there's anyone out there who can't see their nose at all?
