I'm glad to hear it went well! Now that you got the boost, how do you plan to carry that momentum forward?

Main thing for me is separate tab management so I don't have to keep them in my browser. But the app also has preview-on-click and a handy navigation bar.

It's open source on F-Droid, doesn't require login or have any ads - and in cases like that I prefer an app over mobile site anyway.

I've definitely heard folks say that early output is unhelpful or can even be harmful.

I tend to think it's somewhat beneficial. Especially shadowing (repeating or speaking along with recordings of native speakers).

At some point you'll have to practice generating messages in order to build that muscle. But I think more important is to do lots of listening and reading, so you start to build this intuition that tells you when "that doesn't sound right".

  • Anki - flashcard app. Handy to memorize things
  • Wikipedia - lots of casual reading
  • lichess - no compromise open-source chess app with online matchmaking, puzzles, and analysis tools
  • Gauguin - sudoku-ish puzzle game
  • AntennaPod - podcast app
  • Satori Reader - Japanese short stories
  • Waistline - calorie tracker
  • Voyager - mobile Lemmy client that I actually miss when I'm on desktop

Tournament wraps up on day 3 with Tekken and Street Fighter.

Thanks! I probably made it sound better than it is - I came into the year with 250ish already under my belt, so only remembered 500 new so far this year. But it's very gratifying to have a number that keeps going up, that gets closer and closer to a very achieveable target.

Pronunciation will come in time, but my plan is to learn it word by word. Really I already am in a way. But there's no end to exceptions and irregular readings, so it's not as easy to track progress.

What have you been learning and how is it going?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I set a goal earlier this year to learn* 750 Japanese Kanji, and I hit that this week. Not the fastest (I see advice that serious learners should be able to get through all the main 2200 in 3 or 4 months), but much better pace than I've gone at in the past. I've slowed back down in recent weeks, but it still feels good to hit that milestone. Now my goal is to finish learning* the commonly used Kanji this year.

  • By learn, I just mean be add a flashcard for them, and be able to write them from memory. That's not even attempting to learn readings really, even after I'm over this main hump, there will still be so much to learn always.

Thanks! Yeah, I had no idea that work was going into the sidebar, since it doesn't show up in my feed.

Good find!

Not really a manga like the title implies, but more of a magazine like the description says. Really cool of the company to upload all these.

That awesome-archive community also seems nice, if not the most active. Sub'd

That looks useful.

I was gonna mention rtings as an alternative to this, then I saw them included, which is nice.

The one thing I miss in this tool is display lag. It's basically included in the rtings score; but with all the other specific filters, that's one I'd want up front.

Not to defend Nintendo much here, but the situation with game-key-cards is at least better than that. You can freely trade, give away, resell them like any physical cart.

It's a step up from digital in terms of freedom, but a step down in convenience (cart has to be in the system).

Compared to real, physical, data-on-the-cart media though, these are a definite downgrade.

My niece introduced me to LKBC, and so far it seems like a lot of fun!

This is pretty cool! The site doesn't link to much though, just the Spanish course.

If you dig around GitHub just a bit, there are more:

I wonder if there are more custom courses for it out there from other sources?

Will feature 9 characters (Tizoc being the one not available last time) and Training mode.

Did anyone try it out in the previous beta? And if so, what did you think?

This article was making the rounds last year, but I don't think I've seen it posted here - and it seems like a good fit.

It talks about how disconnected the Japanese writing and speaking systems can be, and how that can create some affordances. I found it interesting, at least.
