I can understand the opinion that bringing kids into the world is causing them harm because the world sucks. But the number of people who seemed to bring that opinion into the real world on that sub was kind of scary.

Not an insignificant number of people who had stories like "my stupid natalist coworker wanted to take off to attend their kids' graduation, I told them I wouldn't help and they shoulda thought about that before they had their little shitstains" were there.

Like having kids already sucks enough, making parents' lives harder seems to be actively adding to the harm you're trying to reduce...

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Great comment. That's what I've felt about being antinatalist myself. Not having kids is harm reduction, why would you harm others trying for a kid?

Yeah I'm bitter towards my parents for handing me a huge bill every month to keep existing, but I wouldn't bomb the hospital I was born in.

Turns out, people who are willing to blow others up dont usually think all that clearly.

“Violence has no place on Reddit,” the spokesperson said. “Our sitewide rules strictly prohibit any content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence. In line with these rules, we are removing any instances of the suspect’s manifesto or recordings and hashing to prevent reupload. We’re also closely monitoring the communities on our platform to ensure compliance with our rules.”

But they have no problem with violent right wing subreddits.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

r/combatfootage has never been taken down. It's by far one of the most violent subs ever published on reddit.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Yeah I got banned for violating rule one when I said “I hope he gets sick and dies” about DT. They claimed that was a threat of violence. I told them they needed to keep a dictionary on their desks, cause obviously they can’t fucking read.

I caught a ban over there for joking that some lefty frat bro types needed to follow around Matt Gaetz and hype him up into doing good things whenever he accidentally calls for something positive because he was talking about showing the receipts and taking the GOP down with him when they were stonewalling him after the AG thing.

This community sucks but we far as I know none of these people suggested bombing a fertility clinic on it. Do they ban all Muslim subs after Islamic terror attacks or anti abortion subs when someone bombs an abortion clinic? I hate the direction Reddit moderation has taken because this kind of reactionary bullshit will probably just push these people onto telegram chats and discord channels where they actually will get radicalized instead of just whining about how they wished they had never been born.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

It's post-IPO Reddit. There is no logic. Just a techbro corporate tyrant running the platform into the ground. Hopefully this inspires some to move to Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No but they did ban a whole subreddit (WatchPeopleDie) dedicated to footage of people dying back in 2018 after they dared to show footage of the Christchurch mass shooting - without any prior admin warning whatsoever.

And honestly Reddit were a bunch of hypocrites for how they handled that situation, especially since WPD had tonnes of uncut ISIS execution videos hosted on their subreddit a few years back and nobody on the board gave a shit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In those days, admins basically only banned subs that got large amounts of negative press.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Yes absolutely, they let some ghoulish subs stay up for a very long time until a news piece would be written about it. Like r/cutedeadgirls, r/jailbait, and r/fatpeoplehate

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

No!!!!! you can't just reduce the number of peasants fighting for increasingly artificially reduced resources

[–] [email protected] 28 points 3 days ago

That's such bullshit. The whole concept of anti-natalism is built around suffering being bad. Bombing people is causing suffering and goes directly against AN.

[–] [email protected] 48 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Good. I’ve seen stuff on that sub back when I used that site. It’s takes “I don’t want to have kids and society should stop making me feel bad about it” to the extreme of “nobody should have kids and people that do are child abusers”.

Sadly, they seem like a lot of broken people.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

I'm not about to @ people for having kids, but I have to say that in my experience, the whole idea is nothing but a conceit. People want kids for bad reasons. There's really no sensible reason to have a child in the human world. Fine, go have kids, but don't come back years later upset your kid is rebelling or not following your beliefs or doing bad things or not following in your footsteps or listening to your advice or whatever the fuck. You basically played a slot machine with no jackpot.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Jesus Christ what a depressing take.

I have two kids, and I had them so that I could raise good, caring people to continue society, and because I enjoy being able to nurture them to reach whatever goals they want.

I want my kids to rebel. I want my kids to think for themselves. I'm an atheist, and my kid wanted to learn about Christianity, so I took them to church. I don't need my kid to "follow in my footsteps," I want them to do whatever they find fulfilling.

The best part of parenting is not knowing what to expect and watching what they'll grow into. You're right, to a degree, about the slot machine, but you're wrong about there being no jackpot.

But if you get no enjoyment from that, by all means, don't have kids. In fact, if you're on the fence or unsure, don't have kids. The default should absolutely be no kids unless you're really sure that's what you want.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you think most people who have kids have that expectation, you're lucky.

What if your kid ends up not growing into anything? Becoming a neckbeard on fortnite and minecraft all day?

What if your kid has three kids before she's 21 and keeps ending up with deadbeat guys and living in seedy apartments and living off SNAP?

I want them to do whatever they find fulfilling

And if they dont?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Guy these things are just part of the rich tapestry of life.

I'm certain that many of my and your ancestors were the contemporary equivalent of fortnight neckbeards.

I don't need my kids to win parenthood for me.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do people often blame you for their kids doing those things?

People might tell you about it because... you know... maybe they think you're a friend or maybe they're just venting or maybe they're making small talk.

Parents often make the mistake of thinking everyone understands what it's like. They're trying to find common ground by sharing those struggles.

If you don't like it, just channel the conversation to something you do like. That said, sometimes it's just good to let people vent. People like talking about their kids, and it's a sneaky way to ingratiate yourself to them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Think of it more like someone complaining that they lost money on crypto trading.

It's very Billy Crystal SNL "oh I hate when that happens"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure ok.

Of course its fine to dislike engaging with someone who complains about crypto or kids, but making a judgement on someone's reasoning for having kids is a whole other thing.

Having kids doesn't stack up for you. Totally fine.

However, asserting that your own reasons apply to everyone else is arrogant.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Iv basically never met a single parent that non stopped bitched about their kids that was also a good parent.

While iv also basically never met a single parent that wouldn't shut up about how much they love their kid that wasn't a good parent.

While a parent can do a little of both, it's pretty damn obvious which way a person leans after even a short amount of time. People self report real God damn fast on this topic.

And frankly there's way more of A then B.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Just because you struggle to have a normal relationship, doesnt mean we all can't.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Not broken. Just mentally unwell. We have a national mental health crisis. Normalizing and increasing accessibility to treatment is vital.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also meaningfully addressing the underlying causes of an enormous amount of anxiety. Therapy is good for and should be easily available to everyone, but you can't therapy your way out of rampant climate change, wealth inequality, and governmental rot.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well adjusted people would be more inclined to believe experts in their respective fields than thinking they know everything. They’d also be less susceptible to fearmongering propaganda.

It wouldn’t fix anything overnight, but it would certainly improve everything over time.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I don’t know if it’s mentally unwell to not want children or to question the sanity of having children in this current society or other such situation like the poverty 2/3rds the world experiences.

As a parent, I feel guilt for my child to have to put up with this bs, especially in the workforce that I have dealt with in the 21 years I’ve been working. This shit sucks, and I hate living in this capitalist society we’ve built. There’s no logical way to escape it and just live freely.

And I’m poor in America. It’s even worse being poor outside of America. I honestly think it’s mentally unwell to keep having children in those circumstances.

And let’s add some context before I get chewed out by the smiling happy NT people:

I am autistic. My son is autistic. Life is very difficult and stressful every day because society was not built in any way that fits us. We have priorities and needs that run completely opposite of American society, its economy, its structure. The toiling for ten hours, coming home in the same traffic, raising kids until night, getting an hour to yourself, then bed to just wake up and do it all again for 40 years just feels like death.

And who wants to be forced to subjected to that?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (15 children)

Acting upon a perceived moral imperative to prevent others from procreation demonstrates a lack of interpersonal boundaries. Mentally fit people don’t kill themselves in fertility clinic explosions.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Well obviously that individual was mentally unwell. But the sentiment that one shouldn’t have a child by their own choice due to environmental circumstances by itself isn’t mentally unwell.

I don’t believe people should make that choice for others, but it shouldn’t be seem so abnormal if one does feel that way because, well, *gestures around wildly *

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think you were talking about people who believe in not having kids, and the other commenter was talking about people who want to blow themselves up to prevent others from having kids.

Reddit is the place that proves that this society have an extreme mental health issue.

Reddit has banned a community devoted to a nihilistic, anti-life philosophy

This sentence contradicts itself. Devotion to a philosophy or ideology is precisely what nihilism is not.

To the argument "The Earth is valuable and should be protected" the nihilist would point out that earth having value depends on the continued existence of Humans.

"Being born is like being kidnapped, and then sold into slavery."

-Andy Warhol

We will see more people who feel this way as our society deteriorates under corrupt leadership.

Edit: he didn't hurt anyone besides himself, more than can be said for the avg right wing terrorist.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago (11 children)

Let's not excuse a guy attempting to blow up a random fertility clinic.

It's perfectly reasonable not to want children yourself, but definitely not to (attempt to) blow someone up for wanting it, Warhol sympathy or not.
