It's not garbage, it's just broken. And when Lemmy 1.0 rolls out it will stop working once and for all, I think. And it's really sad because it's so hard to quit using it.
But yes, not seeing any comments when browsing local instance on Sync is extremely annoying.
Not defending the lack of updates in any way. But you can fix this if you login with a browser and enable all languages in your account settings.
