Leider hatten wir in den letzten Tagen einige Serviceunterbrechungen, und es hat leider etwas gedauert, bis wir die Ursache identifizieren konnten. Dafür möchten wir uns entschuldigen, und nun, nachdem wir das Problem endlich beheben konnten, eine Analyse nachreichen.

Unfortunately, we experienced some service interruptions in the past few days, and it took us a while to identify the cause. We apologize for that, and now that we have finally resolved the issue, we want to provide an analysis.

TL;DR: a configuration error, combined with our friends, the AI/LLM scraper bots.

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Da wir auf feddit.org keine Pornografie erlauben sollte das für uns keine großen Auswirkungen haben, aber es gibt auch manche Communities ohne derartige Inhalte, welche dennoch als NSFW markiert sind.

Da wir nur Lemmy-UI aktualisieren erwarten wir keine Downtime.

As we are not allowing pornography on feddit.org this shouldn't have much impact for us, but there are some communities without such content that are still marked as NSFW.

Hallo feddit.org Nutzer, es besteht momentan, wie viele von euch schon mitbekommen haben, eine DM Spam-Welle, in welcher eine Person behauptet Nicole zu sein.

Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass die über DMs verbreiteten Bilder Teil einer Belästigungskampagne gegen die dargestellte Person sind.

Aufgrund dessen werden ab sofort alle Inhalte, auf welchen „Nicole“ abgebildet ist, und alle Informationen, die zur Identifizierung der auf diesen Bildern abgebildeten Person führen könnten, entfernt, um mögliche Belästigungen zu verhindern. Dies gilt auch für ältere Beiträge und Kommentare, sobald diese identifiziert sind.

Wir erwarten auch, dass Moderatoren im Fall, dass solche Inhalte bei ihnen auftreten, diese entfernen.

Bedenkt auch, dass Diskussion zu diesem Thema warscheinlich auch den Absender motiviert mehr davon zu schicken, daher empfehlen wir auch Diskussionen bei einem Minimum zu belassen.

Sollten euch Doxing-Versuche, Spam in Beiträgen oder privaten Nachrichten auffallen, meldet diese bitte, damit wir entsprechende Inhalte umgehend entfernen können.

Hello feddit.org users, There is currently, as many of you have already noticed, a wave of DM spam in which a person claims to be Nicole.

It is very likely that the images distributed via DMs are part of a harassment campaign against the person depicted.

As a result, we will immediately remove all content depicting “Nicole” and any information that could lead to the identification of the person depicted in these images in order to prevent possible harassment. This also applies to older posts and comments as soon as they are identified.

We expect moderators to remove such content if it occurs.

Also keep in mind that discussion on this topic is likely to motivate the sender to send more, so we also recommend keeping discussions to a minimum.

If you notice any attempts at doxing, spam in posts or private messages, please report them so that we may remove such content.

Die erwähnte Sicherheitslücke wurde bei uns bereits vor der Veröffentlichung geschlossen, weshalb die Version für uns keine akute Dringlichkeit hatte.

Wir rechnen mit einer Downtime von mehreren Minuten aufgrund von Datenbankmigrationen.

Dank der persistierenden Föderationswarteschlange von Lemmy gehen uns keine Aktivitäten von anderen Lemmy-Instanzen verloren. Es kann jedoch einige Minuten länger dauern, bis wir wieder mit allen Instanzen synchronisiert sind. Bei anderer Fediverse-Software könnten möglicherweise Posts, Kommentare oder Votes verloren gehen, wenn diese nicht mit der Downtime auf der Empfängerseite umgehen können.

We are planning to update the Lemmy version to 0.19.11 tomorrow. The changelog can be found here.

The mentioned security vulnerability has been addressed on our instance prior to its publishing, which is why this version didn't have urgency for us.

We expect a downtime of several minutes due to database migrations.

Thanks to Lemmy's persistent federation queue, we will not lose any activity from other Lemmy instances. However, it may take a few minutes longer until we are synchronized with all instances again. Other Fediverse software may lose posts, comments or votes if they cannot handle the downtime on the receiving end.

Almost all of my communities still show up as "Subscribe Pending", regardless of what instance hosts them, even a week after I subscribed to them.

Re-subscribing doesn't seem to help.

I'm new to feddit.org. Is this a known problem here?

When browsing through "All", I quite frequently see communities and servers (is that the correct term?) that are in a language I have not selected. I assume they have no language selected.

Is there a way to report them?

I know I can block them, but that's not the idea, is it?

Bin gerade erst von Reddit rübergeschwommen und suche mir ein passende Community zusammen. Wenn ich versuche z.B. "[email protected]" beizutreten bekomme ich eine Fehlermeldung, siehe Bild. Passiert aber (bisher) nur beim Hexbear - Server.

But you can see every post they make gets 53ish downvotes from these two instances, plus some organic ones after a few hours.

A individual user airing their personal biases and manipulating lemmy isn't good for the community, regardless of how you feel about their target. This is a really bad thing (tm)

Hi, I am able to access feddit.org from my wifi, but connecting via my mobile data fails. Is feddit.org doing geoblocking or blocking certain IP ranges? It's negatively impacting the lemmy experience for me hugely, as a lot of images in my feed do not load, and I imagine it's affecting others as well.

The user settings Import feature isn't working for me. Every time I try to import the .json file, I get the following error message:

Please wait a few minutes before trying to import or export settings again

It still failed 5 minutes later, and again 15 minutes after that. Is import functionality broken on this instance?

I tried again seven hours later, and it finally worked. I wonder what was going wrong earlier.

Es gibt viele Namen im Fediverse die ich einfach unfassbar witzig finde da sie mit Worten spielen. Ich wollte schon länger mal anfangen zu sammeln und dachte ich mach das einfach hier statt privat. Erstmal meine subjektive Liste aber rede gerne in den Kommis darüber.

Eigentlich überall kann man Videos hochladen. Mastodon hat Videos. Reddit hat Videos. TikTok ist nur Video. Instagram ist Video. Facebook ist mehr und mehr Video - nur Lemmy nicht. Ich kann hier nur Bilder hochladen oder auf externe Anbieter verweisen.

Also: Wie mache ich das am besten? Hochladen irgendwo anders, aber wo? Ist das ein Setting, das einfach aus Traffic/Kosten-Gründen hier nicht aktiviert ist? Kommt das demnächst bei Lemmy?

Paywalls sind nervig. Paywalls sind aber für den einreichenden User auch unvorhersehbar. Einige Seiten setzen die Paywall nach einer gewissen Zeit. Andere Seiten nach einer gewissen Zahl an Abrufen. Andere tracken die User selbst und geben ihnen eine gewisse Zahl an Artikeln pro Monat. Die nächste Paywall ist geobasiert und greift nur für User in bestimmten Regionen oder Ländern. Andere Paywalls gelten nicht für User aus bestimmten Netzwerken. Die nächsten greifen auf Mobile, aber nicht auf dem Desktop, andere hoffen auf die angeblich höhere Zahlungsbereitschaft von Apple-Nutzern vs. Androiden.

Ob ein eingereichter Artikel jetzt bei euch eine Paywall hat oder nicht, ist für den Einreicher schlicht und einfach nicht einzuschätzen. Es bringt also nichts, wenn man "ARTIKEL HINTER PAYWALL DOOF" kommentiert.

Es gibt diverse Tools wie Archive.ph oder BypassPaywalls, mit denen man die Paywalls diverser Anbieter überwinden kann. Gleichzeitig gibt es aber auch gute Gründe, hier nicht überall einen entsprechenden Link zu posten oder gar den Artikel als Volltext. Das mögen Verlage nämlich selten und wir wollen der Fediverse Foundation ja keinen Ärger einhandeln.

Von daher: Wenn ein Artikel hinter einer Paywall ist, dann schaut selbst, ob ihr die knacken könnt. Oder gar, ob ihr ein Abo abschließen wollt, wenn die Seite regelmäßig interessante Artikel bringt.

Das gilt übrigens auch für das rumgemeckere über heise.de und andere Seiten mit "Datenklauwand". Ist sicherlich nicht toll, wenn Verlage sowas erstellen, aber auch dagegen kann man mit einer guten Digitalhygiene geschützt sein. Und wer meckert, sollte irgendwie dann auch darlegen, welche Links hier überhaupt eingereicht werden sollen - denn irgendwie hat das gesamte deutsche Internet und alle Nachrichtenseiten halt Cookiebanner und wenn Leute dann Beiträge runterwählen wegen so einer Wand stellt sich mir wirklich die Frage, was hier denn überhaupt eingereicht werden soll aus deren Sicht.

Ich bin derzeit in Asien unterwegs und es ist kein Zugriff auf feddit.org möglich. Ich habe es aus verschiedenen Ländern ausprobiert. Ist das so gewollt? Mit VPN nach DE funktioniert der Aufruf ohne Probleme.

Ich habe mich bei feddit.org registriert. Leider ist es nicht möglich, auf NSFW Inhalte einer anderen Instanz zuzugreifen oder anzusehen. Den NSFW Filter habe ich deaktiviert. Wird dies von feddit.org blockiert?
