Welcome 🍁

Lemmy.ca is run by Canadians, hosted in Canada, and geared toward Canadians. However, it is not restricted to Canadians, or Canadian culture/topics/etc. All are welcome!

To learn more about what Lemmy is, or how the Fediverse works, you can visit our simple Getting Started Guide.

This site is run by the non-profit Fedecan and funded entirely by user donations. You can help support us by visiting our donations page.

Rules and Guidelines

1. No BigotryIncluding racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.

2. Be CivilArgue in good faith, attack the argument; not the person, and promote a healthy debate. That includes implying violence, threats or wishes of violence and/or death.

3. No PornThis instance is not made to host porn communities. You're free to access porn communities on other instances through your account, but be mindful of Rule 4.

4. Use the NSFW tagUse your common sense: if you wouldn't want this image to show up on your work computer, tag it as such. In comments, use the
spoiler ::: tag for NSFW images, and put a NSFW mention beside links. Do not use NSFW images as your avatar or banner. :::
5. No Ads / SpamThis instance is not there to act as your billboard. If you want to promote your personal work, at least make the effort to be a contributing member of this community. Your account purpose shouldn't be to only advertise, make it natural.

6. Bot accountIf you are the operator of a "bot" account, make sure to flag is as such in the account's settings.

7. Right to privacyDo NOT distribute the personal information of someone else without their consent (aka doxxing). Information that is public domain can be shared, provided it is in good faith.
ex: The official email of an elected official is fair, the private phone number or the real name of a non-public person is NOT.

8. Report abuseThe report function isn't labelled the disagree button. You might not agree with someone, but that doesn't mean what the person says is against the rules. Using it repeately in this fashion will lead to actions being taken against the reporter.

9. ImpersonationDon't make an account with the intent to negatively deceive or defame someone on the fediverse.
ex: Parody of a famous person is okay, submitting outrageous content as appearing like another user, mod or admin isn't.

Since we depend on them to have this platform, it seems fair to spread their request for donations. To be clear, this is to finance the developers who build this software, and has nothing to do with our specific instance operational costs.

From the Lemmy developers

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. To avoid this outcome and keep Lemmy growing, I ask you to please make a recurring donation:

Liberapay | Ko-fi | Patreon | OpenCollective | Crypto

If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Please use the link below to see current donation stats and make your contribution! We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

Worcester City Manager Eric Batista said in a statement that the city “will never” target individuals passed on their immigration status and that city officials including police do not assist with ICE civil detainments “but may not interfere with it.”

“However, it is the municipality and department’s responsibility to uphold the law and protect the peace of our community,” Batista said. “The series of events was no doubt disturbing and the footage of a family being separated is harrowing … My heart goes out to all those impacted by today’s events and the growing tension we all feel due to the national political climate.”

"Thursday marks 68 days and counting since ANY humanitarian aid was allowed into Gaza. For more than nine weeks, Israel has blocked all supplies: no food, no water, no medicine, and no fuel.

Hundreds of truckloads of lifesaving supplies are waiting to enter Gaza, sitting just across the border, but are denied entry by Israeli authorities.

... Defense Minister Israel Katz said, “Israel’s policy is clear: No humanitarian aid will enter Gaza, and blocking this aid is one of the main pressure levers.” "

""Today marks 68 days and counting since ANY humanitarian aid was allowed into Gaza. For more than nine weeks, Israel has blocked all supplies: no food, no water, no medicine, and no fuel."

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) not only highlighted those conditions in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday but also called out the fact that the worsening humanitarian crisis "gets very little discussion here in the nation's capital or in the halls of Congress," even though Israel has spent the past 19 months destroying Gaza with armed and diplomatic support from the United States."

On 7 May, ESA announced the signing of the agreement, stating that the cooperation would focus on activities in low Earth orbit, with provisions for potential future missions to the Moon. The announcement specifically outlined plans to work together on the “interoperability of rendezvous and docking systems to allow their respective spacecraft to work together.” Other near-term areas of collaboration outlined in the agreement include astronaut training, analogue space missions on Earth, and parabolic flight training.

In addition to near-term collaborations, ESA also revealed that the agreement could pave the way for missions to India’s planned Bharatiya Antariksh Station by European astronauts.

ESA’s agreement with ISRO comes less than a week after the Trump Administration released a proposed budget that would slash funding for NASA.

In response to the White House’s proposed NASA budget cuts, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher wrote that the agency will continue to forge strong ties with space agencies from around the world. And in a subtle rebuke of the Trump Administration’s proposed cuts, Aschbacher added that ESA was committed to being a “reliable partner.”

So, we sheltered this kitten for a few weeks and she easily got a home a day ago after we announced with a poster. We just delivered and we're crushed.

PS: I just couldn't upload an image. Sorry for that too. Just wanted to expel it.

The Greens’ federal election result has been widely condemned as a “disaster”.

The party has been all but wiped out in the House of Representatives. It has lost three of its four members, including leader Adam Bandt, who has just conceded his once safe seat of Melbourne. This leaves the Brisbane electorate of Ryan as the Greens’ only remaining seat in the lower house.

Yet the tired explanations being rolled out – the party is too extreme, too obstructionist, too distant from a mythical single-issue environmentalist past – misidentify the party’s dilemmas.

And they overlook the fact the Greens’ influence will be greater in the new parliament, at least in the Senate.

(The author seems to be in a pretty unique position to comment, given that they literally wrote a PhD thesis on the Greens a few years ago)
